December 2017 Around Town

Jazzy Holiday Gala

The Harvey B. Gantt Center will host its Jazzy Holiday Gala on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at 6:00 pm in the Charlotte Convention Center’s Crown Ballroom, with presenting sponsor Bank of America. The annual black tie event will feature cocktails, dinner, awards, entertainment and dancing. Jazzy is the Gantt Center’s major annual fundraiser and provides an opportunity for the institution to showcase the breadth of its community outreach programming and impact on arts and cultural education. This year, the Gantt Center will present its coveted Spirit of the Center awards to three honorees who have blazed a trail in their respective fields: Ferguson Chambers & Sumter, P.A., esteemed Charlotte-based law firm which has earned an international reputation for affirming civil rights for almost 50 years; Charles Farrar, a world-class artisan who produces finely crafted wooden bowls and vases which are prized by museums and art collectors; and Philip Freelon, renowned architect of the Gantt Center and numerous other cultural institutions, most recently the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Entertainment will be provided by the New Orleans-based Trumpet Mafia, founded by Charlottean
Ashlin Parker, and The Cool Trio, featuring Boris “Bluz” Rogers, Sultan Omar El-Amin and Janalyn Walton.

Handel’s Messiah

Handel’s Messiah is a testament to the human spirit and the highest aspirations of man. Christopher Warren-Green has earned a national reputation for his moving interpretations of Messiah. For the first time, he leads your Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and Chorus and a quartet of soloists in Handel’s oratorio masterpiece and favorite annual holiday tradition. Since the Baroque-era oratorio’s debut, the musical rite of the holiday season has awed listeners, even 250 years after the composer’s death. Introduce young ones to the magic of Messiah or relive it for yourself at these performances, which will take place at the Knight Theater on December 15 and 16 at 7:30 PM. Tickets, which start at just $19, are available at
